Sulfur dioxide is the most common, simple and irritating sulfur oxide, and one of the main pollutants in the atmosphere. Coal and petroleum usually contain sulfur, and sulfur dioxide is generated when it is burned. Sulfur dioxide is a highly toxic gas that will be inhaled through the lungs to poison the victim. SO2 combines with water to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Therefore, sulfur dioxide burns the respiratory tract when inhaled. High doses of sulfur dioxide can quickly cause death.
